Day 6: Rural Cathedral

Day 6: For me, being in a silo is similar to being in a cathedral. Climbing the slippery, cold metal ladder brings you to a tiny rectangular entrance. Crawling through that magical entrance is like stepping into... Narnia. It’s a totally awe inspiring world. The ribbed domed cap hovers 40 feet plus above your head making you feel small as light filters in through the holes that the Pigeons have entered to sing their mellow cooing hymns.

When I was a kid I remember the songs my Dad sang in the silo, as he forked out silage. His tenor voice would be strong and beautiful with a hint of vibrato as he sang songs that I had never heard. I always thought it was strange that this wonderful voice could only be heard in the silo. In Church, my
Dad struggled to carry a tune...

I fear that silos are disappearing slowly from our landscape as the big plastic wrapped “marshmallow bales” have become a more common piece of our lives.
I will always look in admiration as I pass a silo, because I know that each one holds an entrance to a rural cathedral.
